United Rolls Out Upgrades to Premium Service Planes



assengers on United Airlines' flights between New York City's JFK airport and San Francisco or Los Angeles will see some changes on board as of this week. United's premium service ("p.s.") airplanes are being reconfigured as part of the company's recent $550 million fleet update investment. Passengers in all cabins are likely to notice a difference as they get on board one of the planes with the new layout.

All passengers will see an update to the in-flight entertainment system. Rather than overhead screens or personal tablets (only in business and first class), all seats will now have on-demand systems with more than 150 hours of programming available, plus music and games. The screens are 15 inches in business class and 9 inches in economy. The p.s. fleet will continue to offer in-flight internet connectivity through the Gogo service, with the latest Gogo upgrades to be installed during the coming year, further improving the connection speeds and capacity.

For premium cabin passengers there will no longer be a first class cabin on board the p.s. planes. The 12 first class and 26 business class seats will be replaced by 28 new business class seats. These new seats offer fully flat beds, similar to the business class seats used on intercontinental trips. Business class passengers also have access to the United Club lounges at their departure airport.

Economy cabin passengers will also see a mixed bag of changes to the offerings. The old configuration offered 72 seats in an all-EconomyPlus configuration with up to 34 inches of pitch at the seats. The new configuration will have only 48 EconomyPlus seats but the pitch will be greater at 36 inches. There will also be 66 regular economy seats on board with 31" pitch. That's good news for passengers who can get the EconomyPlus seats but many passengers will now have to pay for the increased legroom rather than everyone getting it as part of the regular ticket price.

There is a lot for passengers to be happy about with these changes. But some of the changes are also not so great for passengers. American Airlines and Delta are also stepping up their trans-con service with improved premium cabin offerings and Virgin America and JetBlue also operate in the markets. That's a lot of competition and a lot of choices for passengers. United is hoping these changes let them remain competitive.

Airline Uniforms Get a Fashion Update



ince the halcyon early days when passengers and crew members alike dressed their best to fly, the airline industry has had a close relationship with fashion's top designers and houses. Some of the earliest collaborations include Emilio Pucci drawing up designs for Qantas Airways' flight attendant uniforms in the mid 1970s, the now-defunct Braniff International Airways tapped Halston also in the 70s, one of the hottest homegrown American designers of the time. Air France's staff is currently outfitted with Christian Lacroix's work, while British Airways employees sport looks from edgy British designer Julien Macdonald, known for his work with pop star Kylie Minogue.

Already this year, some big-name airlines have announced noteworthy designer pairings that have the fashion world abuzz.
VIVIENNE WESTWOOD FOR VIRGIN ATLANTIC

Fellow Brits entrepreneurial mogul Sir Richard Branson and punk fashion powerhouse Vivienne Westwood are now business partners, as Virgin Atlantic announced last week that Westwood will redesign the airline's uniforms, which will officially debut in 2014.

This is the first update to Virgin Atlantic's uniforms in a decade, and Westwood will outfit the 7,500 aircraft and airport employees with new eco-friendly threads, in futuristic style spun from recycled polyester. The women's uniforms will have an hourglass shape and a bright red hue, while the men's will be three-piece Saville Row burgundy suits.

Qantas Airways, never shy about bringing top Australian talent on board for a uniform redesign, unveiled its fresh looks from Martin Grant on the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Sydney last month. Supermodel Miranda Kerr even walked in the show, sporting the contemporary, color-blocked designs with punches of red and fuchsia against navy blue.

Grant, a frequent presence at Fashion Weeks around the world, is originally from Melbourne. He is the tenth Australian designer Qantas has worked with since it launched service in 1938. In addition to the aforementioned Pucci, Qantas also has enlisted the handiwork of big names like Yves Saint Laurent and designer pair George Gross and Harry Watt.
KAUFMANFRANCO FOR AMERICAN AIRLINES

This is the year American Airlines is changing its look, from unveiling a new logo to announcing a staff uniform redesign. It is has been more than 20 years since the airlines has altered its uniforms—many consider the update long overdue—and fashion duo KAUFMANFRANCO has been tasked with the job.

Designers Ken Kaufman and Isaac Franco are the two behind the label, a Hollywood-loved brand that staged its first New York Fashion Week show this February. "It's about creating a wardrobe inspired by our fashion runway for American's runway," Kaufman said in an official press release.

In a sign of the times, the KAUFMANFRANCO collaboration is the first of such partnerships for American Airlines. Though designs have yet to be unveiled, American Airlines offers behind-the-scenes online material about the company's multi-faceted redesign, including the uniform update.
